Morgan Tierney - Velskoendraai Restaurant & Padstal

What is special about the place you grew up in?
My father was in The United States Navy and my family moved so much while I was growing up. We moved over 13 different times, which was hard but also wonderful. I was a happy outgoing kid and always being the new girl, I never shied away from talking to people and exploring my new surroundings. I feel blessed to have lived that gypsy life and it prepared me in so many ways for my future.

How long have you been living in Clanwilliam?
We moved to Clanwilliam a year and half ago from the USA xoxo

How long have you been in the tourism industry?
I have been in the tourism industry in some shape or form for most of my working life. I put myself through University working in busy restaurants and bars. Ten years ago I went back to Cosmetology school and set up shop in downtown Nashville Tennessee where a whopping 15.2 million tourist passed through that little big town just last year. Having the opportunity to live here in this part of the Western Cape and see the joy this area brings so many tourist makes me very proud to call Clanwilliam home.

Your favourite activity / place in Clanwilliam and/or the Cederberg region?
We love to take the dogs to the far side of the Clanwilliam Dam for a run and a romp, a quick drive to Eland’s Bay and let them run and chase waves, they have never seen then ocean before, and kayaking at the Bulshoek Dam, pups in tow they love it. These are a few of my favorites. Okay I’m a mermaid and anywhere I can get wet and take the dogs and oh yeah and my boyfriend too ;) I’m there!

What would be a good theme song for your life?
I really love Brandy Carlile’s version of Take Me Home, Country Roads. A little sunshine on my shoulder makes me happy xoxo

Do you speak any other languages? If so, which languages?
I can speak Spanish, baby French and I’m learning Afrikaans and Xhosa. I really appreciate all our guests at the Velskoendraai encouraging me and helping me with my Afrikaans, Baie Dankie Julle xoxo

Being in the tourism industry, what’s still on you travelling bucket list?
I want an overland trip through Chile down to Patagonia. But first there are so many places to go and people to meet here in South Africa! We love to get out and explore our new country xoxo

What do you like most about your career?
I love the buzz of tourist season and the excitement of meeting people from all over the world. But I really love getting to know people from my new town Clanwilliam. Talking with our regulars and helping to brighten their day and put a smile on their face really makes my heart sing.

What is your favorite beverage and food?
Anything my Mommy makes! Mostly her spinach manicotti that she makes me special for my birthday every year, her huge Thanksgiving feast, and delicious Christmas day dinner. But since moving to South Africa I’m a big fan of the Velskoendraai’s roosterkoek hot off the grid with konfyt and kaas xoxo. Oh my word where has that been all my life! Yummy :)

What day of the year is your favorite?
My favorite day of the year is any day I get to spend with my family so… Birthdays, Thanksgiving and Christmas. I’m sure it’s no coincidence they match my favorite foods haha!
